Volvo S70-V70 Abs Module
Having a problem with Abs and Traction control is not a rarity on a V70/S70 Volvo. It is a common and expensive problem caused mostly by the Abs Module. The right way to fix this is to get a new one put in. It does not come cheap though, it’s over $400 for a new one and around $200 to rebuilt it .
Is there a way to go around it? Yes, there is(sometimes). I tried this”unorthodox repair” on a 1998 V70 and it worked. Actually it’s still working 13 months later. It’s cheap and it required 15min of my time. Abs Module is located on the left side of engine compartment under the fuse box. Good news is…you don’t have to remove it at all.
The whole idea consist on putting some space between Abs pump and the Module. It can be done with almost everything: wood, cardboard, plastic. In my case I used a scrap piece of plastic.
Take the spacer and push it between the pump and the module. Make sure it stays tight and won’t fall while driving.
There we go..no Abs and Tracks light anymore and it’s working fine.
I tried this method on 3 different Volvo’s with the same problem and it worked fine on 2 of them. No guaranties though but you lose nothing by trying it anyway.

from what i am seeing in your pics,,,your just wedging plastic in between the module plug connector and the block…probably creating renewed contact with the oxidized plugin prongs,,,would it be better to remove the plug connector and clean the terminals and reaffix the connector back into place??these connectors do short out and melt the module…
My problem was the reluctor rings (castellated ring that the speed sensor reads from)
Bought 2 off eBay for 7 pounds.
Not that hard a job and saved at least 700 doing it myself.
this is just a stop gap measure it only should be done as temporary fix. this will give you time to shop around for a new abs module. xemodex and others carry better than original abs modules at half the price. my advice after experiencing this is get a new one when you can. These cars are great for awhile but wear down a bit just like any other car. I have never bought a new volvo , both of mine have been used. there are some great resources out there to make these cars a good buy.

I wanted to try the remelting metod described on the youtube film, where the ABS module is removed, opened (whith a knife and then the connection lead(??) is) remeldted to secure the connection on the mainboard.

Hi, I tried the fix, with wedging a piece of plastic between the ABS modular and the pump, and viola, all the lights are off my dash, and my abs works on my brakes. Amazing, I saved myself $1200.

I cut a piece off of an empty detergent bottle and viola! Speedo is working again and only the check engine light is still on. Thanks for the very useful tip.

Just bought a 1999 V70 with 205K miles 1 owner complete volvo service records since new. Had the abs and trac light on. I followed these instructions and it worked perfectly. It passed state inspection with flying colors. For only $995 I think I got a deal.

Ha! sure did work! I used a regular fuse as a spacer fit perfect all the lights went out and the speedo is working! 1998 xc v70
Worked for me too! Same problem, same positive results: ABS & Trac lights off, no more intermittent tranny error (flashing upshift light) due to bad speed sensor data from ABS fault, cruise control and speedometer all work great! I used an expired AAA card, folded into 3 layers and jammed-it in pretty tight. Hasn’t wiggled-out yet, and if I ever get stuck, I have the AAA member# with me always. Thanks for the huge help!

It worked to my volvo s70 2000. Lights are gone from my dashboard. I saved tons of money and time fixed with a small piece of plastic. I just brought this vehicle I though it was huge problem after that.

WORKED LIKE A CHARM. I am not sure the part descriptions are accurate but the cure sure is. I disconnected the electrical harness (black plastic item in the photo) and in doing so realized it was very loose. This is the likely cause of the entire problem. I then worked dielectric grease into the pin connectors of the harness before reconnecting it. I could not get it to connect securely, so I then chose to use the wedge method. I used a #20 biscuit for those wood workers out there. Turned the key and everything worked again (Brake and ABS lights, speedometer, and odometer.

I have a 2000 v70. About 2 years ago the the speedometer & odometer quit working and the abs and break lights came on on the dash. I had it checked and was told it was the abs module, which would cost $850.00. The car continued to run fine so I didn’t bother with anything. Last week the transmission all of a sudden wouldn’t shift properly and within a day wouldn’t hardly function. I was told by several shops, as well as the dealership, I would need a transmission. I wedged the clothespin between the abs module and the pump and everything is back to working, including the things that hadn’t worked for 2 years. I called the dealership to see if the abs module might cause the transmission to function improperly… They told me there is no way the 2 have anything to do with eachother. Has anyone else experienced anything like this with your abs module effecting the transmission?

Hi, my ABS isn’t working, but no lights come on, when I breake the pedal feels soo hard and no braking, thakes a few moments to kik in the breaking on the car, when the light comes on (very rarely) the braking pedal feels good but no ABS, what is going on?
One year ago, the ABS and speedometer lights came on; I tried the spacer method worked. One year later, I forget the spacer, and the ABS, speedometer, Engine, and other lights came on. After days of investigation and checking, I remembered the spacer. The spacer was still there, but I inserted a piece of thick paper between the spacer and the pump. Amazingly, it works again, and my V70 has be driven without any warning lights on (even after a few short highway trips).
Un fuc@ing believable ! A broken cloths peg off the washing line has saved me $1300 AUD, cruse control and ABS is functioning again, no speedo fluctuations or failure. With the money I saved I will buy a fine bottle of red and drink it in your honor.
yes Steve H i got same issue 2 in one it seems like? i got my speedometer to work but abs lights still on could also be causing transmission limp mode. anybody knows about this? or i didnt get my abs fully functional?

My speedometer was not working, sometimes it work but most of the time not working. I wedged in a doubled up plastic expired credit card and the speedometer is on again ! 🙂

This is a worst way to “repair” I live in The Netherlands and do ABS controller repair. Price 25 euro’s
When you put a piece of plastic between the pump and the module it will damage your print inside the controller.
One commentor stated this is short term fix. Yet many of you have had this fix in for a year or more. Why does this work, and is it short term, does it cause damage leaving it in? When you have time. eddieboy

Just tried this on my 1998 V70XC AWD. Worked great on my Vehicle. I cut a piece off a wood paint stir stick (Home Depot free stick); sanded the end to make a wedge and slid it in place. Thanks for the information.

I tried it…it worked..I used a wooden dowel wedge, this fix worked on my 1996 850. ABS and Speedo started right back up.
Thanks a million!! My 99 Volvo V70 was doing exactly the same thing. I fixed some wires today, but that didn’t fix it and I was disappointed and kind of pissed. I did a two minute search and found a link to this page. I was a bit skeptical, but I cut out a wedge of wood, very small, worked it between the unit and the pump, just drove it 5 miles and it didn’t cut off once. Knock on wood, hope it keeps working. OMG, it worked like a charm. Speedo works, ABS & TRACS OFF lights turned off. Awesome temp fix. Saved me from dropping $250 for overnight service for a replacement ABS module. The speedometer not working was the only thing from preventing me from passing Maryland State Safety Inspection which expires tomorow (5/11/2016). Glad I found this site. Used a couple of scrap plastic pieces the size of credit cards (2) on my 98 volvo V70 AWD turbocharged wagon.

Would a drive shaft from a 1999 Volvo fit 2000 Volvo also is it necessary to have the drive shaft repaired for a sticker all it’s for is 4 wheel drive it runs drives fine just the same
What a great tip!! I cleaned the connector with electronics cleaner and then put in a plastic wedge. The speedometer is back on my wife’s 1999 V70. Did the same thing on my 2000 C70 convertible; no more lights on and the “cruise” is back…!!! Thanks so much.
It worked on my 99 S70 with 207k. Mine is a non turbo 2.4 liter. I had a the 2 lights come on while I was driving. My car never has lights come on so I wanted them off. I used a small metal part wrapped in electrical tape. My car is older and I don’t want to invest big money in a 17yr old car. Thanks again!

I replaced my ABS module with a good one (it should have been) from my parts car. The occasionally non-functioning speedometer problem seemed to be solved, but not too long later, the dash lights came back on.
A trifolded junk mail fake credit card fit nicely in that gap.
The lights have not returned, and the 0600 code is no longer in the OBD system. Another success story!
What is the purpose of jamming a spacer between pump and ABS module?
Will it potentially damage the circuit board?

The ABS light was ON, and after jamming in a rolled up piece of paperboard, the light went OFF! Thanks for sharing this tip. Took longer to conduct the Google search than to actually solve the problem.
